Wet Boggarts [Sep. 10th, 2007|02:58 pm]
One of the best days of Boggarts yet ... we performed our final dance _in_ the fountains of the Peace Garden ! There's even photos on Flikr, although I've no idea who took 'em ...

Plus we got dragged into a pub by a guy who was just 'out looking for some morris dancers', his lucky day ! Apparently they were having a 'village fete theme'.

On another train altogether, I've always wondered why English is so un-phonetic when it's spelt, whereas languages like Spanish get to sound-like-they-look, or at least much more so. I'm told that it's because the alphabet is Latin-derived, so works for latin sounds - and Spanish is much closer to Latin than English is. Which makes sense, when you consider the degree to which English started out as a Germanic-Norse language :)

Go Cat [Aug. 6th, 2007|03:37 pm]
Heh. The back of the Go-Cat box has an advert for something called a cat 'Play Gym' ... that looks suspisously like a 'baby play gym' . Am I alone in wondering if they got a job lot that failed saftey standards, and some bright spark went "Y'know, cats would love those ..."

New journal ... [Oct. 4th, 2006|03:37 pm]
For those of you that are interested, I've created a new journal "rhaidley" to track my art projects. You can find it here -

My personal stuff will stay here, with the same infrequency.

Die snowman Die ! [Mar. 14th, 2006|08:26 am]
Hee hee hee we made a _tiny_ snowman on sunday afternoon - tiny cos the snow was melting fast and ever so thin on the ground - but as he was very nearly slush he was a.) very dense and b.) 'leaked' continuously. I'm sure no one really needs to hear all about this snowman, I've certainly built better. You've certainly built better !

But it _was_ the first snowman that I've persuaded a giggling five year old to push down a slide :D Explosion of snow ! And then we put him back together and did it AGAIN and AGAIN ...

... and then we put the now diminished snowman on the swings.

(no subject) [Feb. 10th, 2006|10:17 am]
Bzzzb hungover today ... must have been a goodnight, we woke up without remembering going to bed ! *g*

It's been a week in the workshops, learning to weld. *very best manic grin* It's got fire and high voltages, it can't be wrong. And poisonous fumes. I'm not yet persuaded to abandon painting for sculpture, but most of my hesitancy is based on the tedium of queieiuing(*) to use the machines ...

I've learned two valuable things
i.) Zinc can catch fire
ii.) extractor fans are good.

(*) damn word !

Spoke too soon ! [Jan. 4th, 2006|04:48 pm]
... the internet connection remains frail. *sigh*

But a cheery new year seems to be ahead, and I look foward to it ! The holidays were good, celebrating the solstice with Debs & Freya, Christmas day with just D, Boxing day with the family in Wales and New years day with the Derby Crew and my excellent brother :)

... plus of course the entertainment of having to use the outside loo in the freezing cold. But that was normal 30-40 years ago, I guess, and it's almost frightening how quickly you get used to it.

I'm busy designing a new boardgame; those of you foolish ( or fortunate ) enough to have enjoyed ISG8 back in the day will enjoy it's complexity, although it's a completely new game and ( just for once ) not based on anything else ! *beam* more details sooner(*)

(*) or just as likely, later !

Hasty Update [Dec. 21st, 2005|12:09 pm]
... We moved house about four weeks ago, but have been living in a sea of boxes. BT have finaly transfered broadband and by some handy miracle I've managed to get the wireless router working !

It's been a busy few months since I last updated - I'm working a lot harder at uni this second time around, I think it's the sense that time is no longer there to be wasted. I've painted a raft of new work, alongside a smattering of sculpture and drawing. It's becoming very obvious that storage will be a severe problem, so I'm working on the details of two plans simultaneously - the first to sell off a load of pieces in the spring ( always easier said than done ) and the second to loan more pieces out to my mates, to use their walls as storage space. I'll post about this again in the new year, when I'm going to take advantage of a lull in the workload to rehash my website and catalogue my work.

The house is lovely, Chester Green feels like a village within a city, bounded on one side by the river and Darley Park. There's a green outside the front door big enough for several football pitches and sporting a screen of heavy trees along each side. The house has enough bedrooms for Freya to have one to herself, instead of having to share with my piles of art equipment; and the kitchen - after all the pokey kitchens Debs and I have endured over the last decade - the kitchen is huge :) ( Hmmm, not actualy huge, but you _can_ fit more than one person in it ! )

My phone is fucked [Oct. 17th, 2005|08:01 am]
... so don't try to contact me on it :(
It went through the wash *sob* and now it has pretty droplets of water on the inside of the screen.

Still *bounce* start painting at uni today *excitied*

Going Costal ! [Sep. 19th, 2005|06:17 pm]
... not unlike going postal, but with more sand and less napalm.

We played zombies :)

In a big ol house up in scarboro with a load of our mates from Particle and the Bears; Debs n' I got to stay in a four poster bed. It's still in one piece :p

Hmmm ... running on the beach, circling the ( unexpectedly closed ) castle, drinking in a frankly dodgy hovel of a pub. swearing at swerving 4x4's, eating, more eating, lazing around, throwing skittles at Chris, hey, fun for all.

It's a shame somebody mentioningnonames took a key away ;) Although all's well as ends well !

And we negotiated an extra day cheap :)

... might rant about the 4x4 in a bit. I'm in a ranty kind of mood, and it's harmless.

Running [Sep. 15th, 2005|10:00 am]
Because of our extreme shortage of available hobbies(*), Debs and I have taken up running. I'm *looks sheepish* something of a convert ... I think perhaps it's good exercise just because once you've got so far from the house, you can't just give up cos you've got to get back again ;)

More accurately, I think, all that energy expenditure generates loads of endorphins, there's nothing like being both sweaty _and_ high.

Hee hee, and I've got a heart-rate monitor too and learned that just because it feels like you're going to die, doesn't mean that you are :p

(*) or days to do them in ...

Fink [Sep. 3rd, 2005|01:30 pm]
Sometime around midnight, [info]debsbattlequeen and I finaly made it down to batfink, after a several month hiatus. Hooray ! Number seemed a bit thin and a lot of the 'usual' crowd were either missing, or somehow permanently on the other side of the stage from us :/

And shocked to hear it's the last-but-one ! We'll have to make a particular effort to make it to the grand final, if at all possible !

I was pleased to see members of the sheff crew that I've missed awhile; [info]captainweasel and Gill(*), [info]silverixnay, [info]asw909, [info]psynian, [info]rhino_neil, Lee, Karen, Nige, Ali and others.

D and I are both in serious need of some new clubbing kit; today will be a trip to Notts to try and find some inspiration.

Published ! [Aug. 12th, 2005|08:58 am]
My illustrations for Joseph Gauthier's "The Wind" appear in Western Tales of Terror, #5 !

*beam*
The Critics say ...

"Joseph Gauthier writes about what happens when people start listening to the wind, with R.H. Aidley supplying Barry Windsor-Smith-esque art"

"'The Wind' by Joseph Gauthier & R.H. Aidley are both quick and dirty horror pieces that get their point and get out, and while they may not have the punch of a longer story, they're a good example of how to tell good stories in short form"

The tooth fairy is real ! [Aug. 10th, 2005|09:44 pm]
Ambling back through town, I was delighted, thrilled and secretly vindicated to spot the sign "Fairy Dental Service" adorning a dentists.

It wasn't until about 200 yards later that I realised I'd mis-read "Friary Dental Service".

Painting and Bristol [Aug. 1st, 2005|12:23 pm]
I've moved up a size in painting, now working on 24"x24" boards. It's a whole different ball-game ! from having to walk to the other end of the studio(*) to see it properly, to estimating the amount of paint needed for coverage, it's taking some adjusting to. Will post results when, er, available - but the first picture is looking shockingly bad so far :/ It may yet get painted flat and rebooted !

D and I made it down to the environs of Bristol at short notice for [info]thedivinegoat's birthday meal. It was great to see the relatives again and the next generation rising. And I think I've rarely seen anyone match my Uncle's heavy industry geekery, but D's job's given her a wide knowledge of the history of train depots. *baffled* And more importantly, I can recomend the local beer "butcombe bitter" should you ever be in that neck of the woods.

Seems like I haven't posted any paintings for a while, so here's the next one, "Landscape in Orange"

I've now got some of my stuff into an online gallery, too.
... had some enquiries already for sales :)

Courtship of the Pheonix [Jul. 24th, 2005|05:30 pm]
... still in the theme of monochromatic palettes, here's my nearly abstract work 'Courtship of the Pheonix', a contemplation in Red. The inclusion of the birds gives some dimension to the otherwise abstract shapes, and a graduation in both temperature of colour and of motion crossess the canvass from top left to bottom right.

Roses [Jul. 22nd, 2005|11:24 am]
Well ... inspired by roses, anyway. Artist Keith Edmier created a sculpture of a dozen roses out of red acrylic; most noticeable is that they are the same red all the way through, including the stems and the ribbon holding them together. The result is very evocotive, mixing as it does both the symbolism of the colour and the natural colour of roses into a single monochromatic whole.

I thought this was a very powerful idea, and made three paintings in response to it. This is the first of them, which I call 'Leaf Green'. I think it suggests something disturbing by mixing naturaly green objects with those that have been given an unusual nuance by re-presenting them in green.

Next ! [Jul. 21st, 2005|04:32 pm]
Next picture, still in line with Boccioni's work. This one takes the anatomical morphiing idea more directly, and blends the action lines with the background and light sources.

Boccioni [Jul. 19th, 2005|10:20 am]
Boccioni is an italian futurist painter and sculptor, who's bronze-cast "Unique Forms of Continuity in Space" greatly impressed me. It needs to be seen in 3D to be appreciated properly. To me the idea that it most strongly evokes is the synthesis of form and movement; the anatomical acuracy of the sculpture is surprising in it's detail, whilc each shape also evokes the sensation of movement.

I based two paintings on this principle, trying to capture the essence of Boccioni's idea without aping his style. In this one, which I'll call "dancers" for obvious reasons, lines and colours project through the figures in the direction of movement to hook them into the space around them. At the outer edges the lines become stone like and ossified, providing a juxtaposition between the timelessness of where they have been and the imediacy of where they are now.

art [Jul. 18th, 2005|06:20 pm]
The Scanner's still buggered. But I've got the digital camera working, so not all is lost.

Here's "But For Antlers" - an experiment in form. I like the evocation, though !
